Avoid the Summer Slide: How The Learning Lab’s Summer Programs Keep Kids Learning

Students can lose up to two months of academic progress over the summer if they don’t engage in structured learning. This “summer slide” makes it harder for children to catch up when the new school year begins, especially for those already struggling with reading, writing, or math.

That’s why The Learning Lab’s S.M.A.R.T. Summer Program is designed to help kids stay ahead while making learning fun and engaging. Our structured summer curriculum targets key academic areas to keep students motivated, confident, and prepared for success in the fall.

A Proven, Engaging Approach to Summer Learning

The S.M.A.R.T. Summer Program is built around research-backed methods to reinforce essential skills while preventing learning loss. Our daily schedule includes:

  • 30 Minutes of one-on-one instruction: This program is determined by placement screening and evaluation data to address your child’s unique learning needs typically an Orton Gillingham reading intervention program.
  • 30 Minutes of Clear Fluency: This program boosts reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, helping students read with greater confidence and understanding.
  • 30 Minutes of Small Group Math Remediation or Enrichment: Provides customized instruction to reinforce essential math concepts and build problem-solving skills in a supportive setting.
  • 30 Minutes of Small Group English Language Arts (ELA): This class focuses on writing, comprehension, and vocabulary to help students express themselves clearly and develop strong communication skills.
  • 30 Minutes of Individualized Enrichment/Skill Building: Tailors instruction to each child’s unique learning needs, fostering academic growth and boosting confidence in key subject areas.

Who Can Benefit from the S.M.A.R.T. Summer Program?

The Learning Lab’s S.M.A.R.T. Summer Program is designed for elementary and middle school students who need additional academic support to close learning gaps, prevent regression, and build strong foundational skills.

However, every child learns differently, so we start with a comprehensive student evaluation to identify their unique learning strengths and challenges. This process includes:

  • Academic Placement Screening: Identifies each child’s reading, writing, and math skill level to create a targeted learning plan.
  • Learning Style Assessment: This helps us understand how your child learns best so we can tailor instruction accordingly.
  • Personalized Goal-Setting: Based on assessment results, we create customized enrichment plans to ensure students get the support they need in a way that works for them.

This structured support ensures that every student receives a tailored learning experience, keeping them engaged and making real progress throughout the summer.
