Preventing the Summer Slide with Our Flex Summer Program

As the school year concludes and the anticipation of summer vacation grows, it’s essential to address a common educational phenomenon- the “Summer Slide.” Research indicates that children can lose about 20-30% of their academic success over the summer months. This setback can affect students’ readiness for the upcoming school year, impacting their confidence and performance.

Fortunately, Learning Lab offers a unique solution through its Flex Summer Program, designed to combat this slide while accommodating flexible summer schedules and combating learning losses in crucial academic areas.

Understanding the Summer Slide

Research indicates that students can lose up to 20% of their reading gains and 27% in math during this period. The challenges of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic have further exacerbated these losses, making it even more critical to find effective strategies to support student learning over the summer.

Key Features and Benefits of the Flex Summer Program

Flexible Scheduling: The program is designed to work around other summer activities, offering morning and afternoon sessions to ensure that learning can continue without disrupting summer plans.

Customized Learning Plans: Based on initial screenings and evaluations, each child receives a personalized learning plan aimed at addressing their specific needs and academic goals, ensuring that instruction is both effective and relevant.

Comprehensive Support: The Flex Program covers essential academic areas, providing practice and instruction in math, writing, reading comprehension, and fluency, with the goal of maintaining or advancing students’ academic progress over the summer.

Enrollment and Investment

Enrolling in the Flex Summer Program involves a subject area placement screening or a full Learning Lab screening to assess each child’s needs and assign the appropriate level of support. The program’s investment depends on the number of sessions scheduled, making it a flexible option for families with varying needs and budgets.

Enhancing Learning with S.M.A.R.T. Goals

For students needing more intensive support, Learning Lab provides the S.M.A.R.T. Summer Literacy Program. This six-week intensive is ideal for students who are significantly behind in reading and/or math. The program utilizes S.M.A.R.T. goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, TimeSensitive) and the F.I.T.T. Principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type) to ensure measurable progress in phonemic awareness, phonics skills, and reading and writing fluency.

Beyond the Classroom: Support for Every Child

Learning Lab is committed to supporting every child’s learning journey, offering both in-person tutoring and virtual learning tools. Learning Lab provides summer learning support across Broward, including our newest location in Davie, Cooper City, Plantation, and Fort Lauderdale.

The summer months offer a unique opportunity for students to relax and recharge, but it’s also a critical period to maintain and build upon the academic gains made during the school year. With the Flex Summer Program and the additional support offered by Learning Lab, students have the resources they need to overcome the Summer Slide. These programs not only help students retain their academic skills but also prepare them for a successful start to the school year ahead.
